This stair was built for private clients in the Meggetland district of Edinburgh. The stair connects the main house to a basement level, formerly a cellar.
Because of a steep gradient in the ground level the rear garden is at basement level. So the converted cellar has exterior windows and large double opening glass doors onto the garden making a brightly lit space, now seemingly always part of the house.
Inscape were contracted to do parts of the work. We built and fitted the French doors and laid the sub floors but our principal piece of work was the staircase.
The ground floor hallway walls were paneled in douglas fir and this was the material chosen for the new stair. The stair itself is designed to look like a single folding wooden element Stainless steel balusters compliment the contemporary design and enable views through from the upper floor down into the garden room.
