An Turas

Shortlisted as Britains best building and winner of Scotlands Best Building 2003, An Turas is a Scottish Arts Council funded project for Architect, Artist and Engineer to collaborate in making a structure for the island of Tiree. Located near to the pier, the structure is intended to act as a shelter for ferry boat passengers.

It is hoped it will reflect some of the qualities of the island, distilled as a line in the landscape.

Inscape constructed the blackened Bridge section of the scheme in our workshops in Edinburgh. The entire structure comprises a white walled corridor leading into the bridge section, which in turn leads to a glass belvedere.

The Bridge is intended to be a sensory contrast to the white walled corridor, light to dark, outside to inside. The bridge itself is a black felted and stained structure with open slatted floor revealing views of the exposed rock below. It is intended to reflect traditional building crafts of roof structures, house interiors and boat building found on the island.

The glass belvedere at the end is a similar sensory blast this time seperating the non visual senses from the environment.
