The brief for this work was to maximise the available space and to generally brighten the place up giving a contemporary feel to a previously converted mews.
Earlier conversion work had been ill thought out and these errors were not possible to correct without fundamental change so instead we attempted to maximise the available potential.
The wall seperating the entrance hall from the tiny kitchen space was removed and a drop down table from Ikea made it possible for two to eat in the room. A beech lay-on floor by Kharrs runs throughout the ground floor area and the use of beech is picked up and appears all through the house.
Mirrors were also employed to create a greater sense of space and to allow light to reflect into some of the darker corners. The meanish living room window tucked into an alcove formed by the stair was 'doubled' in size by placing a mirror on the adjacent wall and on the external ingo which also gave views of the garden otherwise hidden from the room.
More recently we have designed and built an external studio/ pavillion for the client, built in redwood and stained a midnight blue and partially glazed on three sides, the timber framed building now forms a focal point in the terraced rear garden.
