This was the first leg of our trip to Germany in the company of Richard Murphy Architects in October 2005
Eichstatt is a beautiful little Bavarian town without a leaf out of place. Population about 15,000 and the location of the Catholic Unversity of Germany.
The real purpose of our visit was to view the work of Karljosef Schattner.
The vast body of his work is contained within the town, the detailing is exsquisite and he masterfully blends the new clean architecture of the 20th century with the Bavarian heritage of the town.
He makes respectful acknowledgement of the work of Scarpa and the influence is plain to see, but in this sleepy corner of Germany he has carved out his own architectural language.
This was an unknown to us prior to the visit but the experience has been well taken and for anyone with any interest in this style of contemporary archticeture then look at these images and if at all possible make the journey.
